APULIA: GROTTE DI CASTELLANA

CASTELLANA CAVES
Castellana Caves were discovered in 1938. Together with Ostuni and Alberobello they are one of the main attractions for tourists in Puglia.
The caves are made up of underground karst hollows and long tunnels branching out for about 3 Km, reaching a depth of 71 metres. You can see funny natural sculptures such as Black Cave (Grotta Nera), Monuments Big Cave (Cavernone dei Monumenti), Créche Small Cave (Cavernetta del Presepe) and the beautiful White Cave (Grotta Bianca).

White Cave (Grotta Bianca)
You can choose between two guided routes. A route is shorter (it is recommandable if there are children among the visitors): it lasts 50 minutes and it gets to Precipice Cave (Caverna del Precipizio). Another route is longer (about 3 Km: it takes you two hours to walk down it) and it gets to the popular White Cave (Grotta Bianca), labelled as "the brightest cave in the world". It is 70 mt underground and it is really wonderful thanks to its crystals'whiteness and its impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
